Quality healthcare depends on the completeness and clinical enrichment of a patient’s record at the point of care and across the population.

Data exchange in healthcare is important because it allows healthcare providers to access and share patient information across different healthcare settings and systems. This partnership allows a more complete picture of patients’ health, providing immunization records, lab results, medications, and procedure results and will reduce the need for patients and their families to request paper records.

This interoperability story revolves around CARTI, a leading cancer treatment center, and its successful integration with the SHARE Health Information Exchange (HIE). This partnership has brought numerous benefits to cancer patients, transforming their care experience, and enhancing the effectiveness of their treatments. 

CARTI, renowned for its comprehensive cancer care, with 18 locations statewide, has long recognized the importance of interoperability in delivering optimal patient outcomes. The organization realized that by securely connecting its Flatiron-OncoEMR system with SHARE HIE, they could seamlessly exchange patient health information with other healthcare providers across the region. This exchange of data would significantly improve care coordination, reduce redundancies, and empower patients to become active participants in their own treatment journeys.

Integration Process: CARTI embarked on a strategic integration project to connect its EHR system with SHARE HIE, a trusted platform facilitating secure health data exchange. The process involved collaboration between CARTI’s IT team and SHARE HIE’s technical experts to establish a seamless connection while adhering to privacy and security regulations. Comprehensive testing and data validation were conducted to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the exchanged information.

Little Rock, Arkansas May 2023          SHARE, Arkansas’ statewide health information exchange, announced today that Unity Health has successfully connected to its health information exchange (HIE) network.  The connection of Unity Health’s Meditech Expanse electronic medical record system with SHARE’s HIE greatly expands its capabilities to coordinate patient care quickly and efficiently with community providers throughout Arkansas. When a patient is hospitalized or has a medical test performed at one of Unity Health hospitals or clinics, important health information is electronically recorded and made automatically available to the patient’s care providers on the SHARE network. Information shared includes laboratory results, radiology results, pathology reports, immunizations, allergies, diagnosis, transcription notes and vital information from admissions and discharges. This immediate communication helps the patient’s care team better track his or her medical needs, which can prevent repeat hospitalizations and redundant testing. 

Little Rock, Arkansas April 2023      Despite the widespread availability of secure electronic data transfer, most medical information is sometimes locked in data silos. To improve the completeness of a patient’s record and close gaps in fragmented care coordination, ARcare Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC’s) continues to expand their connection to SHARE HIE. On Friday March 31, 2023, a massive tornado rummaged through Little Rock to Wynne, Arkansas causing destruction and devastation in its path.  ARcare’s connection to SHARE HIE continues to offer a streamlined way to receive clinical data in real-time on the patients they serve throughout Arkansas while getting alerted on daily hospitalizations and emergency room encounters. The statewide community FQHC clinics have instant access to the most current patient-encounter data ─ physician notes, lab results, diagnostic results, procedures, ordered prescriptions and more ─ to inform clinical diagnoses at the point of care especially during national disasters such as tornadoes.  

Through SHARE, ARcare’s 75+ locations in Arkansas, can access patient data that is actionable, relevant, and easily accessible. This data is available at a provider’s fingertips and helps impact patient care, especially in rural areas.

At the start of the pandemic, Congress enacted the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA), which included a temporary requirement that Medicaid programs keep people continuously enrolled, and, in exchange, states received enhanced federal funding. Department of Human Services, which oversees Arkansas Medicaid, has taken several steps to educate Medicaid beneficiaries and provide them with the necessary steps to reduce coverage disruptions. SHARE, Arkansas’ only statewide HIE has collaborated with Arkansas Medicaid to provide notifications to primary care providers on the potential impact of losing Medicaid Beneficiaries. SHARE leveraged its existing patient groups and existing notification services to send out targeted reports to primary care providers throughout the state.
